Undergraduate Applications 2018

I want to be a Writing Lab undergraduate tutor. What do I do next?

Before you can tutor in the Writing Lab, you must apply to take one of our training courses before being eligible for employment. We offer two sections of the same course, and once you've been accepted, you can register based on your schedule (please see times below). Application materials and course information can be found below.

The courses are typically offered each fall semester, with some special offerings in spring semesters. The deadline for application materials is Monday, February 26, 2018 at 6:00 pm. Please contact Tammy Conard-Salvo if you have questions.

We are interested in reflecting the diversity of the Purdue community. Students from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply for positions in the Writing Lab.

ENGL 390: Tutoring Practicum in Writing

This course will teach you to become an undergraduate peer tutor in the Writing Lab. Tutors work with a variety of clients across campus, including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. Tutors are trained to respond to different kinds of writing in different stages of the writing process.

ENGL 390 can be taken for two or three credit hours, either for a grade or with a pass/no pass option. You will also be required to spend 1.5 hours in the Writing Lab each week gaining hands-on experience to prepare you for tutoring.

Prerequisites: You must have taken either ENGL 106, ENGL 106i or ENGL 108 (or a suitable equivalent) or be taking one of these classes when you apply. You must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

To apply:

  1. Complete the MS Word application form. We are still accepting applications. Please contact Tammy Conard-Salvo for information.
  2. Submit an electronic copy of of your resume and a writing assignment from any Purdue course to Tammy Conard-Salvo (tcsalvo at purdue dot edu).
  3. Ask an instructor to complete the online English 390 Instructor Recommendation Form.
