Undergraduate Applications 2016

I want to be a Writing Lab undergraduate tutor. What do I do next?

Before you can tutor in the Writing Lab, you must apply to take one of our training courses before being eligible for employment. You can choose either ENGL 390A or ENGL 390B (or, when available, the special combined section) depending on which tutoring position you'd like and what prerequisites you've taken. Application materials and course information can be found below.

The courses are typically offered each fall semester, with some special offerings in spring semesters. Although the inital deadline for our fall applications has passed, we still have open spots in our tutor courses. Please contact Tammy Conard-Salvo if you wish to apply.

We are interested in reflecting the diversity of the Purdue community. Students from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply for positions in the Writing Lab.

English 390A (for tutoring first year composition)

This course will teach you to become an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA), a peer tutor of writing for first year composition courses. UTAs work with students in ENGL 106 and 108 classes on a variety of writing assignments including research papers, reflective essays, and multimedia assignments.

English 390A can be taken for two or three credit hours, either for a grade or with a pass/no pass option. You will also be required to spend 1.5 hours in the Writing Lab each week gaining hands-on experience to prepare you for tutoring.

Prerequisites: You must have taken either ENGL 106, ENGL 106i or ENGL 108 or be taking one of these classes when you apply. You must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

To apply:

  1. Complete the MS Word application form. We are still accepting applications. Please contact Tammy Conard-Salvo for information.
  2. Submit an electronic copy of a writing assignment from any Purdue course, to Tammy Conard-Salvo (tcsalvo at purdue dot edu). Copies will not be returned.
  3. Ask an instructor to complete the online English 390A Instructor Recommendation Form.

English 390B (for tutoring business and professional writing)

This course will teach you to become a Business Writing Consultant (BWC), a tutor for business, technical, and/or professional writing.  BWCs work with students on variety of workplace documents and course assignments, including resumes, cover letters, memos, reports, and proposals.

English 390B can be taken for two or three credit hours, either for a grade or with a pass/no pass option.  You will also be required to spend 1.5 hours in the Writing Lab each week gaining hands-on experience to prepare you for tutoring.

Prerequisites: You must have taken or be currently taking (only) one of the following: ENGL 203, 306, 409, 419, 420, 421 or 422.  You must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

To apply:

  1. Complete the MS Word application form for English 390B. We are still accepting applications. Please contact Tammy Conard-Salvo for more information.
  2. Submit an electronic copy of your resume and a cover letter explaining why you would like to take the course, your professional goals, and any additional information to support your application.  Please submit these documents to Tammy Conard-Salvo (tcsalvo at purdue dot edu).
  3. Ask an instructor to complete the online English 390B Instructor Recommendation Form.
