Purdue OWL Purdue SURF Program Workshop Resources

The OWL is pleased to announce the addition of a new resource designed as part of the Purdue Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) Program Writing Workshops. This resource is the first to be created for our new Writing in the Purdue SURF Program section. This resource covers how to write effective problem statements in Purdue SURF Program writing assignments.

Purdue OWL Introducing the Next OWL Coordinator

It has been an honor to work on the Purdue OWL during my time at Purdue. I first used the OWL in college, and when I came to Purdue, I wanted to be involved with the OWL, a resource that has helped millions across the globe. Little did I know when I started my PhD that I would become a content developer and then the coordinator.

When I started as coordinator, I wanted to develop the OWL's media resources and contribute to discipline-specific writing resources. The OWL team had learned that users wanted more interactive resources, and I was committed to responding to users' needs. In responding to those needs, I had the great fortune to work with many talented people who were dedicated to the OWL: content developers; the OWL webmasters, Jeff Bacha and Caitlan Spronk; the Writing Lab administrators, Professor Linda Bergmann and Tammy Conard-Salvo; the Writing Lab staff and tutors; and numerous OWL users. As a result, the OWL now has an official YouTube channel, a citation style chart, and writing resources for veterinary technicians. I thank everyone involved in these projects, which have helped the OWL continue being one of the most popular writing resources.

One of the content developers with whom I had the opportunity to work was Joshua M. Paiz. Josh created our most popular YouTube vidcast to date, "Cover Letters." I am pleased to announce that Josh is the next Purdue OWL coordinator. As you can see from his introduction below, Josh has experience using and working on the OWL. His research in second language studies and English as a second language will provide an important perspective to OWL content development.

I'm looking forward to using the OWL at my next institution, Towson University. As an assistant professor of professional writing, I am eager to continue using the OWL in my undergraduate and graduate classes, especially knowing that the OWL will continue developing under Josh's direction. 

From Josh (Purdue OWL Coordinator, starting 2012):

Hello, I’m a PhD student in Second Language Studies/English as a Second Language with research interests that include second language writing and computer-assisted language learning. I’ve used the Purdue OWL extensively as a graduate student and as an instructor of mainstream and ESL composition. I’m very excited to be joining the hard-working and energetic Purdue OWL team, and I’m look forward to adding my own energy and passion to the Purdue OWL.

During my first year in the doctoral program at Purdue University, I joined the Purdue OWL team as a content developer. I developed vidcasts to help expand the Purdue OWL’s YouTube page. I created the vidcast on writing cover letters, and I functioned as the “tech guy” on the personal statements vidcast. I firmly believe that these dynamic resources are extremely valuable to learners and educators. I also feel that these dynamic resources represent a new and potent way of delivering content to the millions of Purdue OWL users across the globe. I would like to state that I also feel that the Purdue OWL’s static resources are expertly crafted and of equally great value to its users. 

As I transition from being an OWL content developer to being the new OWL coordinator, I plan on pulling heavily from my experiences in both academia and industry to help the Purdue OWL continue to grow and to help keep the Purdue OWL useful and relevant. I plan on pulling from my research interests in second language writing and from my experiences teaching both mainstream and ESL composition to continue to grow our ESL resources and our writing across the discipline resources. I will also draw from my experiences as a vidcast content developer to continue to push the Purdue OWL’s YouTube channel towards growth and diversity of available content. Finally, I will call on my leadership experiences from industry to connect with Purdue OWL users to help focus our growth in coming year. Based on input from OWL users, I will strive to ensure that we have the right resources available in a timely manner. I will also do my best to ensure that we have deployed the right talent to appropriate development projects. Having the right talent in the right place at the right time will enable us to continue to develop the quality content that has made the Purdue OWL so impactful and so relevant for its end-users.

I look forward to being of service to the Purdue OWL’s users.

We are pleased to announce another YouTube vidcast, "Personal Statement Writing." Thank you to content developers Laurie Pinkert and Joshua Paiz for writing, creating, and producing our 21st vidcast.

Thanks, too, to everyone who has subscribed, linked to, and watched the Purdue OWL YouTube Channel over this first year. As of today, we have 340 subscribers and over 38,000 views. If you have feedback on the vidcasts or ideas for future vidcasts, please contact the Purdue OWL Coordinator. We are eager to hear about how you are using these vidcasts in your teaching, writing, research, etc.

Purdue Writing Lab Tutors Recognized for Outstanding Tutoring and Teaching

The Purdue Writing Lab congratulates UTA and graduate tutors for their recent accomplishments.

The UTA of the spring 2012 semester is Sung Jun Ma, and the BWC of the semester is Elise Crane.  The graduate tutor of the 2011-2012 year is Matthew Allen, with runner up as Rebecca Pulsifer.

Graduate tutor Cristyn Elder was recognized by the Committee for the Education of Teaching Assistants with an Excellence in Teaching Award. You can read more about the award here.
