Five Major Rules for Lab Tutorials

Tutors do not proofread or edit papers.

Tutors can help students with any stage of the writing process, from getting started on an assignment to the final stages of revision. They can help students with grammar, but they will not make any changes on a paper, nor will they edit or "fix" a paper for the student.

Tutors will work only with writers and their texts.

They will not tutor someone who brings in a friend's, a roommate's, or a spouse's writing. In order to be tutored, students should bring in their own texts.

Students are limited to 1 thirty-minute appointment and 1 drop-in per week.

Standing appointments (weekly appointments with a specific tutor throughout an entire semester) are given only to students in English 106 who work with an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA).

Students who are not in English 106 are welcomed (and encouraged) to make follow-up appointments with a tutor they have seen before. These appointments are made only one week in advance, as opposed to standing appointments, which are scheduled for the entire semester.

If a student shows up late for an appointment, the student forfeits the tutorial session.

Tutorials last 30 minutes, and tutors spend all of that time discussing students' work with them. When students arrive late, tutors do not have the time to address their concerns in the time remaining; therefore, tutorials are unproductive.

Tutors will send only Writing Lab forms to instructors.

These forms, sent at a student's request, will describe what was covered in the tutorial session. Tutors will not sign any other forms or other documentation, even if the forms are provided by instructors.

If your instructor is not aware of this policy, tell your tutor, and the Writing Lab staff will explain this policy to your instructor.
