The facilitator should run the program and read through the facilitator notes a few times prior to running the presentation before an audience. The facilitator notes are not designed to offer instructors a "script" for speaking, but to provide a guide for each individual's unique presentation and initiation of audience interaction. Questions are placed throughout each workshop, designed to allow the facilitator to pause the discussion and invite participation. The instructor may wish to have students respond in small groups or to the entire class.
Facilitators are also invited to make these presentations specific and relevant to class assignments or projects by adding questions, examples, or ideas that would enhance students' understanding of presented topics and concepts. Each presentation also offers suggestions for the distribution of related handouts from the OWL. Instructors may wish to distribute these handouts prior to the presentation or following the discussion. Suggestions for relevant handouts can be located on the first notes page of each presentation. Before downloading and using these PowerPoints, we ask that you please review our fair use policy.
For Purdue Faculty-West Lafayette Campus: You can invite a Writing Lab instructor to come to your class and facilitate any of these presentations. For more information, call the Writing Lab at 494-3723.
To run these presentations, you must have a PC or a Macintosh platform that contains Microsoft PowerPoint. We recommend PowerPoint 98 or 2000 for the complete use of the animation settings. If you don't have Microsoft PowerPoint on your computer, you can download a free PowerPoint viewer which will allow you to view and print the presentations.
In PowerPoint, the presentation will automatically open to the first slide of the presentation. In the "Normal" view, you will be able to see the slide as well as the facilitator guide. We strongly suggest that you review the facilitator guide prior to presenting a show. To advance to the next slide, click the down arrow on the right side of the screen.
To view the presentation in the "Slide Show" mode, move the mouse to the "Slide Show" drop-down menu at the top of the screen and click on "View Show." A mouse click anywhere on the screen will then advance the presentation.
Please note that the facilitator guide for each presentation indicates in bold the slides that have special animations, designed to allow the facilitator to pause for questions or invite discussion.
If the facilitator desires to return to a previous slide, advance to a future slide, use a pen to write on the screen, or access the "speaker notes" (the location of the facilitator guide), a pop-up menu can be accessed by gliding the mouse over the lower left corner of the screen.
The "Go" command will allow the facilitator to jump to other slides in the presentation. "Speaker Notes" will allow the facilitator to view the facilitator notes for that slide. Selecting "Pointer Options" and "Pen" will enable the facilitator to write on the screen during the presentation. "Screen" will permit the facilitator to erase you pen marks or go to a black screen. Find the pop-up menu now by gliding the mouse over the yellow box and clicking the mouse on the menu that appears.
At the end of each presentation, the facilitator will be guided back to the main menu. At the main menu slide, open the pop-up menu and click "End Show." Then close the program and exit PowerPoint. To ensure a smooth presentation, facilitators should practice the presentation and read through the facilitator notes prior to presenting material to students.
If you are having problems downloading the presentations, try either right-clicking on PC's or click-and-hold on MAC's. Then, choose either "Save Link As..." or "Save Source As..." A window should pop up in which you will have to title the file to be downloaded and choose a place to store it. Be sure to append ".ppt" to any title that you choose.
NOTE: We have a limit on the number of users who can simultaneously download these files. If you are unable to download at a given time try again later.
If you are still have difficulties with the download, please contact the Purdue University Writing Lab OWL Coordinator by calling at (765) 494-3723. Good luck with your presentation!
