Purdue English Department Hosts Computers & Writing 2010
The Purdue English Department is hosting Computers & Writing (C&W) this week, May 20 - 23, 2010. The theme for C&W is "Virtual Worlds." Here is an overview from the C&W website:
As mobile communication takes hold, Web 2.0 matures, and serious gaming and virtual worlds offer us more enticing opportunities for communication, instructors in Computers and Writing are being challenged to integrate these technologies into writing classrooms in ever newer ways. So, too, are scholars of writing technologies challenged and inspired by online participatory cultures to forge new meanings for composing in these virtual worlds. Such integrations and their challenges have pushed the boundaries of composition.
Activities are planned in the Writing Lab. Check the C&W schedule for details: http://www.digitalparlor.org/cw2010/programdraft.
The Purdue Writing Lab and OWL are hosting an open house Thursday, May 20 from 3:45pm-5pm in Heavilon Hall 226. Join us for light refreshments and learn about:
- graduate student research in computers and writing
- recent developments with the OWL redesign and usability project
- outreach and engagement efforts
A number faculty and staff from the Purdue Writing Lab will be presenting at C&W. To see a complete list of presentations, see the C&W program: http://www.digitalparlor.org/cw2010/programdraft.

News from the Purdue OWL
New Purdue OWL Coordinator
From Allen: For the past three years, it has been my pleasure to serve as the Purdue OWL Coordinator, collaborating with a great team of scholars - Dana Driscoll, Jeff Bacha, Linda Bergmann, and Tammy Conard-Salvo, as well as the hard-working OWL Email Tutors. Together, we have ushered in a number of changes - in design, content, and organization - as we continue the evolution of the Purdue OWL in order to meet the needs of our users. While the position has been challenging at times, I've thoroughly enjoyed my tenure as Coordinator.
I'm a little sad to be moving on; but, at the same time, I'm pleased that the OWL will be in very capable hands as I begin my position as an Assistant Professor of Writing at Loyola University Maryland. As a scholar, teacher, and researcher, I will no doubt keep using the OWL as Jeff and Liz build on the work of a long line of dedicated OWL staff.
I'm very happy to welcome the new OWL Coordinator, Elizabeth L. Angeli, to the OWL nest. Given her background in professional writing and research, I'm confident she will continue improving the OWL and listening to users' needs.
From Liz: As a doctoral student in Rhetoric and Composition and a Professional Writing instructor, I have been an avid OWL user for many years. I began using the OWL when I worked as a writing center tutor at my previous institution, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and I'm excited to join the team of a writing resource that has been valuable for millions of users.
Having served as an OWL content developer for the past two years, I developed resources such as the APA and MLA sample papers and resources for Writing Across the Disciplines. I will continue expanding the OWL's role in assisting students from a wide array of disciplines and education levels. Part of this plan stems from my research interests in medical rhetoric and writing and community engagement. I see the OWL as a site of engagement and a place to fill gaps in Writing Across the Disciplines and to address the needs of secondary and post-secondary education users.
As Allen stated, I will strive to listen to users' needs to continue improving the OWL, because the users' drive most of the content that OWL staff produces. I'm excited to be the newest member of the OWL nest and look forward to building on the outstanding work of previous and current OWL staff.
