Specific Ways to use OWL in your Classes

Here are some specific suggestions for using the Purdue OWL to help with various aspects of teaching and learning. If you have used the OWL in other ways, please let us know by sending us an email at link@owl.english.purdue.edu. We also have a section of materials for Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), and a whole collection of Internet resources, including specific resources for teachers.

Presenting material to an entire class

• use our PowerPoint presentations to help present lessons on various parts of the writing process and specific writing tasks to your students
  
• provide print copies of our handouts to students to supplement or introduce concepts being taught in class or that they will need to incorporate into their writing
  
• have students read the handouts online by linking to them from your course website

Responding to student work and supplementing classroom instruction

• if you use Microsoft Word's comment feature to comment on student drafts electronically, you can cut and paste OWL links into your comments to give students links to more information
  
• you can also provide copies of or links to handouts, workshops, presentations, and other resources on the OWL site to your students who ask for help on particular topics
  
• if students have brief questions or want feedback on parts of their writing, encourage them to mail one of the OWL tutors

Individual or group work

• have students work through a hypertext workshop either as a homework assignment or alone or in groups in class
  
• have students use our Internet resources section as a starting point for their Internet research, either on their own or in groups
  
• assign handouts, practice exercises, PowerPoint presentations, or workshops as part of homework, or use them as warm-ups in the classroom

Writing as a process

• use one of our PowerPoint presentations on various aspects of the writing process, such as organizing arguments and starting to write
• use any of our many handouts on the writing process

Research strategies (online and library)

• use one of our PowerPoint presentations on searching for information, using THOR, or citing soures
• use any of our many handouts on research strategies, citing sources,
• use our workshop on searching the Internet for information to help students learn about Internet research
• use our Internet resources as starting points for research

Term or research paper

• use one of our PowerPoint presentations on research papers
• use one of our PowerPoint presentations on citing sources in MLA or APA format
• use any of our many handouts on various research skills and citing sources
• use our hypertext workshop on writing a research paper, which covers the entire process, including evaluating sources

Grammar and usage

• use one of our PowerPoint presentations on grammar and mechanics
• use one of our many handouts on grammar and usage

English as a Second Language

• use one of our many handouts for English as a Second Language students
• visit our resources for English as a Second Language teachers for tips and strategies for teaching
• visit our resources for English as a Second Language students, or refer your students to that page

Resume and job material preparation

• use one of our PowerPoint presentations on resume writing and writing in the job search
• use one of our many handouts on resume and business writing
• use our resume workshop or our cover letter workshop
