Introducing the Writing Lab to your classes

As you prepare your syllabus for next semester, we hope that you'll remind your students that all writers, including good ones, can benefit from talking about their writing with Writing Lab tutors. If you or your students want to learn more about what the Writing Lab is and what we do, check out our frequently asked questions page.

Here are some suggestions for introducing the Writing Lab to your classes.

• Include information about the Writing Lab and OWL on your syllabus. (We have some sample text that you could copy and paste.) If you're putting your syllabus online, link directly to our Writing Lab services page, our OWL main page, and to any of our handouts that might be useful for your students.
• Take your students on a tour of the Writing Lab. During the first two weeks of classes, we offer 15 minute tours of the Writing Lab for any class. To schedule a tour, call the Writing Lab front desk at 494-3723 or stop by Heavilon 226.
• Request some free brochures, fliers, and/or bookmarks about the Writing Lab for your students. To request flyers, send us a note through intercampus mail, call the Writing Lab front desk at 494-3723 or stop by Heavilon 226. You can also download and print some of our flyers from our OWL.
• If you're in a computer lab, or if your students have access to computers, have them take the Writing Lab virtual tour to learn more about what the Writing Lab has to offer.
• Schedule an in-class workshop and have a Writing Lab instructor give a presentation about a topic.
• Encourage your students to visit the Lab for tutorials by offering extra credit or other incentives. Use our Writing Lab referral form for use in referring individual students to the Lab.
• Encourage your students to attend in-lab workshops on topics related to your class.
