Navigating the OWL

The first section of the tour will explain the different ways you can move through the OWL. We'll start with the homepage, and then we'll continue on to the header and footer information that appears on each page of the OWL, beyond the home page.

The home page contains drop down menus for quick site navigation, information about the various services that the Writing Lab and the OWL provide, contact information for the Writing Lab, a search box for searching the web site, a subscription form for the Purdue OWL News. Each service is explained in the table below.

1: call out for pull down menus at the top of the owl home pageThese four pulldown menus at the top of the page are your fast track to different parts of the OWL web site. Just click on the arrow to the right of each box, and a list of topics in that category drops down. Click on the topic you want, and you'll be taken there.

Click on any of the graphics to visit that particular section of the OWL web site and find more information. You can also click on any of the links to go right to specific information about a topic.

three; callout for the lab info section on the OWL home pageThe Lab Info section offers information about Writing Lab hours, and contact information for the Writing Lab and OWL. We'll also post information about upcoming lab events here.

four; callout for the quick links section of the OWL home pageThe Quick Links section offers quick links to some of the most popular as well as the newest pages on the OWL web site.
five; callout for the search engine on the OWL web siteThe search box allows you to search the OWL web site. Just type in what you're looking for and click on the search button!

six; callout for the subscribe to the OWL news page on OWL home page This box lets you subscribe to our newsletter. If you'd like to subscribe to the Purdue OWL News, a weekly e-mail newsletter about writing, just enter your e-mail address in the box and click on the "join the list" button.

Alrighty, so that's the home page. Learn it, use it, love it. If you want to continue on to a quick discussion about the header and footers, go ahead;these are very helpful in finding your way around our OWL. However, if you feel like you can figure that stuff out on your own, then move on into a sample of our well-known instructional handouts.
