Welcome to the Purdue OWL News! This is an online newsletter about happenings in the Purdue University Writing Lab and the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL).
We³re always glad to hear from you at owlnews@owl.english.purdue.edu! We³re sending out the OWL News a little early this week so that we can attend the Computers and Writing conference at Ball State University. If you³ll be at the conference, look for a poster session about the OWL on Saturday afternoon!
Here³s our grammar question of the week, brought to you by the Online Writing Lab Tutors here at Purdue.
As I was writing this, I was not sure it was right.
I am staying in a room, overlooking at the mountains.
Questions: Is a comma necessary between room and overlooking? Who overlooks, the room or I? What is the difference between looking at versus overlooking at? Or should I say I am staying in a room where it overlooks at the mountain? Is at necessary?
Here³s the answer. You don't need to use a comma between "room" and "overlooking" because the phrase "overlooking the mountains" (you should omit "at") is an adjective phrase modifying room. "Looking at" refers to the act of observing something. "Overlooking" in this context refers to the position of the room and does not require the use of the particle "at."
Got a question about some aspect of your writing? Want some advice about a persistent issue that crops up every time you compose? Send the OWL News staff an email at owlnews@owl.english.purdue.edu and we³ll feature them in our newsletter!

Looking for a quiet place to study? Searching for that elusive comfortable couch on campus? Need a place to wait between classes or to take a break from Maymester³s frantic pace? In addition to offering tutorials, workshops, and computers, the Writing Lab is also open for students who just need a place to relax or get some work done. We have free animal crackers, too! Come visit us in Heavilon Hall, Room 226; we³re open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the summer.
Our Maymester tutors, Brian Yothers and Maryse Jayasuriya, are waiting for you to drop in and see them about all your writing needs. They³re also available to give tours of the Writing Lab, offer workshops if you³re teaching a class, or help you find reference material or handouts for yourself or your students.
