Welcome to the Purdue OWL News! This is an online newsletter about happenings in the Purdue University Writing Lab and the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL). Were always glad to hear from you at owlnews@owl.english.purdue.edu!
Heres our grammar question of the week, brought to you by the Online
Writing Lab Tutors here at Purdue.
I am having trouble deciding when "very" is an adverb or an adjective.
In the following sentence it seems that very is an adverb modifying little,
but I am not sure: They could purchase a new home for very little money.
If it is an adverb then how and when is it used as an adjective, and will this
be true for most of the words that are qualifiers?
Heres the answer.
Very is most frequently used as an adverb modifying verbs, adjectives, other
adverbs, or entire clauses, as in the example you've given.
The only time it is an adjective is when it is directly modifying a noun. For
example: He was the very opposite of what I had expected. She gave me the very
book I needed to complete my research.
