Purdue OWL News
February 23, 2001

Welcome to the Purdue OWL News! This is an online newsletter that will keep you informed about happenings in the Purdue University Writing Lab and the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL). While we recognize that most of you can't visit our lab in person, we'd still like to tell everyone about what's going on in our physical writing lab and our online writing lab, because we see them as a team effort for helping people with writing. (If you ever are in the West Lafayette, Indiana area, please stop by and visit us!) We welcome your suggestions and feedback at owlnews@owl.english.purdue.edu.

What's Happening On OWL

OWL Eye On... Business Writing

With hypertext workshops, PowerPoint presentations, and handouts, the business writing section of OWL offers help for people in every stage of the job search and for those looking for basic help with writing in a business context. We are working hard to update these business writing resources. In fact, we have recently added a new handout on objective statements and a new sample resume. You can find links to these new handouts at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/pw/index.html.

The undergraduate tutors are also in the process of developing a PowerPoint presentation on scannable resumes and a new handout on developing the education section of your resume. Watch for them soon!

PowerPoint Presentations

Here are some PowerPoints related to job searches and business writing. You'll find presentations on resumes and cover letters at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/workshops/pp/index.html#business.

Resumes
This 40 to 45-minute presentation is designed to help students develop their resumes and attract the attention of prospective employers. This presentation covers methods for developing each section of the resume and is well-suited to any person preparing documents for the job search process.

Cover Letters
This presentation is designed to help students more fully understand the expectations readers have when reading a cover letter. This presentation is ideal for any student, especially those students who are nearing the time when they will be ready to apply for jobs or internships.

Developing Your Resume
This sixty-one slide presentation takes students through a comprehensive interactive workshop about the drafting and desigining of their resume sections, including the contact information, the objective statement, the education section, the experience section, and the honors and activities section.

What's New on OWL

We've added a new handout on objective statements http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/pw/p_objective.html
