Welcome to the Purdue OWL News! This is an online newsletter that will keep you informed about happenings in the Purdue University Writing Lab and the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL). We welcome your suggestions and feedback at owlnews@owl.english.purdue.edu.
In addition to providing writers in the Purdue community a chance to work one-on-one with tutors, the Purdue University Writing Lab provides a number of other services for its writers. For example, we offer a number of In-Lab workshops that are designed to provide Purdue students with an opportunity to learn about a variety of writing-related topics, including information about basic writing skills, research papers, business writing documents, and the use of OWL (Online Writing Lab).
In-Lab Workshops coming up in the next two weeks are:
To find out more about In-Lab Workshops, you can visit our page about them at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/lab/labwrkshps.html. Purdue instructors are also welcome to invite a Writing Lab tutor to visit their classes and conduct workshops with their students. For more information, please visit http://owl.english.purdue.edu/lab/workshops.html.
Starting a research paper? Researching for fun or profit? Whether you're a student, a teacher, or out in the working world, OWL has some great resources for starting a search for information.
PowerPoint Presentations
The Purdue Writing Lab staff has developed many different PowerPoint presentations for use in In-Lab Workshops and for visiting classes. We have made these presentations, which include facilitator notes, available on OWL for you to download. (Please make sure that you read our fair use policy at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/lab/fairuse.html first.)
Here are some PowerPoints related to doing research. You can download all of them at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/workshops/pp/index.html#research.
Search Engine Tutorial
Searching the Internet for information can often be confusing because of the vast quantity of information available and the number of different ways to search. Jessie Moore's interactive section on searching the World Wide Web offers explanations of the most common kinds of search engines, tips for using search engines effectively, and interactive tutorials that guide you through searching with each different kind. Try it out! It's at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/internet/search/index.html
Starting Points for Internet Research
The OWL staff has assembled a multitude of links for gathering information in areas that range from art history to mathematics to women's studies. If you're looking for information in a particular subject area, we invite you to visit http://owl.english.purdue.edu/internet/tools/research.html Many of these links have been submitted by our readers; if you have one to contribute, please email it to us at link@owl.english.purdue.edu.
OWL also has a multitude of other Internet resources available at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/internet/index.html.
