Support for the Purdue University Online Writing Lab

Purdue University's Online Writing Lab (OWL) is a project supported by the Purdue University School of Liberal Arts, its Department of English, and a Purdue University Academic Reinvestment Program Grant.

The OWL is designed to offer distance learning for the Purdue community as well as other Internet users. Our primary goal is to help writers improve their writing skills by offering them a variety of online services and materials and an introduction to searching for information on the Internet. We also hope that this project will help us develop future innovative uses of the Internet for distance learning and writing instruction.

The Purdue University OWL (Online Writing Lab) has received grants and support from various sources within the University, under the following programs:

• Office of the President: Undergraduate Instructional Equipment Grant
• Office of the Executive Vice-President for Academic Affairs: Academic Reinvestment Grants
• Office of the Dean of Academic Services: grant
• School of Liberal Arts: funding and support for Teaching Assistantships for OWL Coordinators; Faculty Incentive Grants
• English Department: OWL Teaching Assistantships and additional funding

Licensing Agreements to Use OWL Materials

Materials available on the Purdue University OWL (Online Writing Lab) have been licensed for commercial and educational use, through the Purdue Research Foundation's Office of Technology Transfer, from the following:

• Classroom Connect made a donation to OWL to enhance the server system and was granted permission to include some of OWL's copyrighted materials in its CD programs for teachers. (1996)
• Infonautics Co. has entered into a licensing agreement with Purdue University to adapt some of OWL's materials for its Web site. (1997)
• The Dublin City University Business School has requested a licensing agreement with Purdue University to load some of the OWL materials on to their Web site and adapt the materials for their students' use. (1997)
• Purdue University has entered into an "Educational Material Subscription License Agreement" with Prentice Hall of Canada that permits them to reprint several pages of the OWL Web site in Peter Jakubowicz' Key to Reading in Science, Business and Technical Fields (1997).
